I was hoping I could get enough reading done on this topic this week to get a good article out if it. Though it is a fascinating subject… How can colour affect our moods, behaviours and feelings the way they do? What makes one person prefer one colour over another?
Marketers, designers, artists, and others use colour for a living. Yet as I was diving deep into colour theory and colour psychology, I realised that I could sum up all of my reading in a couple of sentences. There are interesting theories, interesting stories about cultural, social and personal responses to colour, but more research is needed. Everyone’s reaction to colour is different. This is why understanding what makes art great for one person, but bad for another even harder.
Red in one country can mean anger and danger, while red in another country can mean luck or passion in another.
That specific shade of a colour can remind you of afternoons spent baking with your mom and always give you warm fuzzy feelings, where it can evoke quite the opposite in someone else.
Because everyone’s relationship with colours varies according to factors that haven’t all been identified yet, there is no easy way to sum up what this is exactly and how it affects us. Are these associations we make with colour learned or is there a physical reaction that happens when we see a certain colour?
An interesting fact I learned is that some colours are visible light in the form of wavelengths, but others are interpreted colours by the cells in our eyes that are averaging out the colours and creating colours like pink or magenta (which have no wavelength and should not even exist).
Colour therapy is another aspect that I wanted to dive in deeper and I may do that in a future article, but given the information I found here, it is not more encouraging that there will be much more good information on the topic. But whatever I find, given there is an effect of colour on mood and thus influencing thoughts and actions, I believe it is still worth exploring even though the why is not very understood.
