When we think of motivation, we think of the drive, the energy, the persistence to tackle a task and get it done. No matter what it is. Crafting, creating, going to the gym, and even cleaning your house all feel like they require motivation to do. But what if I told you, that was the wrong way to go about it?
The writer or artist waiting for the muse to strike is the perfect example of the wrong way to do it. Waiting for motivation is like waiting for a whole airports-worth of planes to be on time… in winter. It can happen, but you are more likely to end up being delayed for a long time, if not have your trip cancelled altogether. Why is this so? What is motivation exactly?
To understand motivation, it is important to understand the reward cycle in our brains. We do something (action), whatever it is makes us feel good (reward). Our brains then want more of those good feelings, so it releases more neurotransmitters (Dopamine in particular). A deficiency with this transmitter can sometimes be linked to fatigue, depression, and apathy.
Our ancestors developed this system because they would look for food. When they would find it, the reward was survival and a good feeling that would keep them looking for more. Or it would encourage them to come back to the same place as well as avoid the bad places (which this neural pathway is also responsible for.)
Types of motivation
Intrinsic
Something you want to do because you enjoy it. An activity that is motivated by something intrinsic (inside your “self”.) Feelings of satisfaction such as “Yes, I did it” are what drives the behaviours here. It is an act or behaviour that is naturally satisfying to you. It is an activity we enjoy or an activity that we see as an opportunity to gain experience, to explore, or to realise our potential. The rewards are more internal and create more positive emotions in us, such as satisfaction, joy, and happiness. These activities are more likely to come with a sense of meaning. They can give you a sense of progress or increase your self-esteem when you do it.
Intrinsic motivations are usually beneficial for the longer-term projects as they are sufficient to keep being motivated and to keep going when things get difficult. There is also evidence that people are more creative when they are intrinsically motivated.
Extrinsic
Something you are motivated do because you will get an external benefit (money, prestige, power, fame…) or to avoid a negative outcome such as a punishment (or rejection, or criticism). This is what is meant by extrinsic (outside your “self”.)
Extrinsic rewards are often better short-term. They can boost productivity though there is evidence that quality is more internally than externally motivated.
Combination
There is some evidence that if you add extrinsic motivation factors to an activity that already has intrinsic motivation factors, you can reduce motivation instead of increasing it. This is known as the over-justification effect. As creatives, this can have more of an impact as we are usually taking something we love (an intrinsic factor) and trying to make a living at it (so adding a monetary reward, which is an extrinsic factor).
Next week, I will look at tips and tricks you can use to boost motivation so you have less trouble getting things done and you can find work that is important to you. In addition, I’ll try finding ways to mitigate the over-justification effect, so that we can do what we love without losing our motivation for it.

I used both types of motivations. When I was working and I didn’t like my job, it was the money and a better pension plan that kept me going. But I still had to use internal motivation to get up and go do that job.
Now I still use both but mostly intrinsic motivation since I do things at my own pace and time.
